This is a simple story about a confused kid (to be explained later)who loved science, be it astronomy, biology, chemistry, she loved all of them. Her interest and curiosity towards biology related to the human body started growing up when she was in Grade 10 and when they were taught the nervous system of the human body. It kept her fascinated ever since. So, meet her! Hi, I’m Hasini.

I’m currently a fourth-year undergraduate at the University of Kelaniya, following Management and Information Technology, specializing in Business Systems Engineering. While studying all these management subjects and some IT subjects, I also had the chance of exploring the new world, how the world is progressing towards data-driven solutions for the betterment of humankind. I love reading about them. With these opportunities, the old passions kept coming to me, giving me new hopes about studying analytics related to medical sciences.

While studying for my fourth year I then came across this mentorship program called “Scholar X 2021” which was advertised on Facebook. I had already heard and known a little about this from friends who took part in this program the previous years. Out of my curiosity, I decide to sign up for this, because why not have a mentor for myself when I am about to finish my college studies and plan for my next years in life. There was a huge list of mentors this year, I was indeed happy to see this sort of a versatile program for Sri Lankan undergraduates. Blessed us indeed.

Interestingly then I happened to find a mentor’s name same as mine, Hasini! I read her summary with such curiosity to only find out that she exactly works in the same field that I was thinking of getting started with. Would I be matched with her as my mentor was the next question I had because I am a student with a management and IT background? Thanks to Scholar X organizers I was selected to be one of the mentees under Dr. Hasini Jayatilaka. I’d tell about her in my next blog for sure.

“A lot of little miracles happen secretly” Aren’t they?

She was very kind enough to understand my background, my concerns, and my requirements from the program through emails, and the first meeting is planned to happen in another few days' time.

So as a summary, I would say, if you have a will there will always be a way to make things happen!

This confused kid is yet to unravel the ways for her! Wish her good luck! See you in my next blog

Thanks, I’m Hasini Balasuriya
